Alcatel-Lucent SA (ALU), the French phone- equipment supplier whose shares are trading near a 23-year low, will cut the workforce in its home market by about 15 percent as part of a global reduction of 5,500 jobs.
The cuts, outlined in July as part of a program to save 750 million euros ($984 million) in costs, will affect sales, marketing and administrative employees, said Simon Poulter, a spokesman, citing what management told unions today in a meeting. More than half of worldwide firings will take place in the Europe, Middle-East and Africa region.
Chief Executive Officer Ben Verwaayen, heading into his fifth year as CEO, is accelerating a turnaround bid after thousands of job cuts, restructuring and asset sales failed to make the Paris-based company profitable. Alcatel-Lucent, which earned an annual profit for the first time in five years in 2011, posted a loss of 254 million euros in the second quarter.
“These are difficult decisions, but are necessary for the long-term health and sustainable profitability of the company,” Poulter said.
Alcatel-Lucent jumped as much as 7.4 percent to 86 cents and was trading up 6.8 percent at 12:36 p.m. in Paris in the biggest gain on France’s benchmark CAC 40 Index. (CAC) The stock has fallen 29 percent this year, and was at the lowest price since at least 1989 on Oct. 9.
‘Fight Back’
In France, where Alcatel employs 9,000 of its 78,000 workers, about 1,400 job cuts are planned, according to the CFDT union. Verwaayen faces a tough stance from French President Francois Hollande, a Socialist elected in May after pledging to block “a parade of firings.” Alcatel Chairman Philippe Camus was called in by government officials for a meeting in mid-2012 to discuss the manufacturer’s plans to eliminate positions.
“We plan to fight back against these firings,” the CFDT said today in a statement. “We’ve already contacted ministry officials and ask the government to take charge.”
Still reeling from the 2006 purchase of Lucent Technologies Inc. which boosted costs, Alcatel is also coping with plunging sales to European carriers and price competition from Asian vendors such as Huawei Technologies Co.
