McData sheds 28 percent after warning
BROOMFIELD, Colo. (CBS.MW) - McData shares tumbled to a five-month low one day after the storage networker cut its first-quarter financial targets and two days after it brought a lawsuit against a competitor.
On late Tuesday McData cut its first-quarter financial targets due to weak spending on information technology products. On Monday, McData sued competitor Brocade for patent infringement.
On Wednesday, McData's (MCDTA: news, chart, profile) stock lost $4.33, or 28 percent, to $11.08. This drop follows a 12 percent fall on Tuesday.
C.E. Unterberg, Towbin analyst James Poyner cut estimates for the quarter and the year, as well as his price target to $18 from $30.
"While the expected March-quarter loss is disappointing and will limit the stock's near-term performance to a trading range of $12-$15, we believe, we are not changing our ratings at the current price due to our continuing belief that economic improvement is already under way and that McData's product cycle in coming months is attractive enough to improve revenue."
The first quarter
McData said it now expects a first-quarter loss of 2 cents to 4 cents a share on revenue of $73 million to $78 million. Its previous targets called for earnings of nil to 2 cents a share on revenue of $85 million to $95 million.
McData cited a continuous cautious approach to IT storage and related infrastructure investment spending so far this year, especially by larger corporations. The company did say, though, that its order pipeline remains strong and is consistent with expectations.
Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial/First Call expected earnings of 2 cents a share on revenue of $91 million, on average. Actual results will be reported on April 17.
Gross margins are expected to be 42 to 44 percent.
Revenue and margins are expected to improve during 2002, according to the company.
