Kone Taps Nokia Executive As CEO
Monday November 22, 4:41 am ET
Finnish Elevator and Escalator Builder Kone Taps Nokia Executive Matti Alahuhta As CEO
HELSINKI, Finland (AP) -- Elevator and escalator manufacturer Kone Corp. said Monday that a Nokia executive was appointed as its new chief executive.
Matti Alahuhta, 52, had been part of Nokia Corp.'s strategy department and a board member of the Finnish mobile phone giant since 1993. He replaced Manfried Eiden, who decided to step down and return home to Germany for personal reasons, the company said.
The announcement came after Kone finalized plans earlier this month to split the company in two.
The new companies, to be named Kone Corp. and Cargotec Corp., will streamline operations and separate already existing business lines.
The plan will be up for approval by shareholders at a meeting scheduled for Dec. 17, eight days after the company publishes a prospectus for the split, which is estimated for May 31.
"We believe that in this phase Matti Alahuhta brings extensive and global know-how which, coupled with Kone's strengths, will support the company's competitiveness and market position," chairman Antti Herlin said.
While at Nokia, Alahuhta was in charge of the phone maker's business strategy, but was replaced last year after the Espoo-based company reorganized its mobile phones unit into three parts and tapped new leaders.
Kone is the world's fourth-largest elevator company. It employs 33,000 people and has 800 service centers in 40 countries.
Kone, with its head office in Helsinki, has two divisions; the escalator and elevator unit based in Espoo near the Finnish capital, and Kone Cargotec in the Finnish capital.
Last year, revenue was up 23 percent to euro5.3 billion euros (US$6.7 billion), while net profit jumped 38 percent to euro217 million (US$274 million), up from euro157 million in 2002.
