--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday starts out a full week of earnings results with over 76 companies within the S&P 500 reporting. Financials led the day after three of the largest banks in the US reported record earnings. Overall, profits were driven by a strong consumer segment as banks enjoyed increases in loan, deposit, and credit card volumes. Bank of America (BAC $45.73 +0.84, 1.8%) posted a 41% rise in earnings due to its merger with FleetBoston - in-line with expectations. Wells Fargo (WFC $61.46 +0.7, 1.2%) missed on the bottom line, generating 10% profit growth, while National City (NCC $36.37 +1.1, 3.2%) posted a 76% jump in profits. Financials will remain a key area of focus this week as others large cap banks including JP Morgan (JPM $38.40 +0.5, 1.5%) and Citigroup (C $48.17 +-0.6, 1.3%) report.
On the economic side, New York State manufacturing data came in weaker than expected. The index dropped to 20.08 from 27.07 in Dec, vs. estimate of 25.0. The dollar gained against the euro to 1.302 level after a Treasury Dept report showed an increase in US assets purchased by investors in Nov.
The Dow component, 3M (MMM $82.02 -1.9, 2.3%) reported in-line, but its guidance disappointed sending shares down. Ameritrade (AMTD $12.85 +0.4, 3.3%) posted a record profits with earnings rising 29% y/y, as its competitor Charles Schwab (SCH $11.39 +0.2, 2.4%) suffered a 64% profit fall. Food stocks continue to be strong with several names breaking out including General Mills (GIS $51.82 +1.1, 2.3%). Krispy Kreme Doughnuts (KKD $9.61 +0.8, 10.2%) stocks soared after the company ousted its CEO after a federal investigation forced co to restate earnings. Alcan Aluminum (AL $44.40-2.4, 5.2%) guided Q4 earnings below expectations, which in turn put pressure on Alcoa's (AA $29.77 -0.1, 0.4%) shares. One of the largest copper and gold producers, Freeport-McMoRan (FCX $38.20 +1.5, 4.3%) handily beat consensus putting a positive spin on expectations for its peers within the Metals/Mining industry. Abbott Labs (ABT $46.04 -0.2, 0.4%) came in-line. Shares in Forest Labs (FRX $41.79 -0.3, 0.9%) traded lower on high volume despite Q3 earnings coming in two cents ahead.
All eyes will be on bellwether IBM (IBM $94.90 +0.8, 0.8%), which reports earnings after the close along with other notables Motorola (MOT $17.43 +0.4, 2.3%), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD $15.50 +0.3, 2.2%), and Yahoo (YHOO $37.18 +0.4, 1.3%). The market will be looking for Big Blue to deliver positive forward guidance. Considering Yahoo is trading at a forward price/earnings multiple of 107.89x, the co will need to beat in order to move the stock.
Crude oil hit traded near $50 a barrel - a seven week high on concerns the cold front will drive demand for heating oil weighing on the market. But the rise was short lived as oil sold off in later sessions closing the day unchanged at $48.40 with natural gas following suit at $6.135. The Dept of Energy will release its inventory data on Thursday due to the holiday this week. Gold closed up slightly to $423.20.
In the table below are the ten top-performing and worst-performing S&P industry groups on Tuesday.
